It’s Sunday night, it’s been a fast and furious weekend. The days seem to blend right into the next and the next thing you know the weekend is over and it’s back to the grind. As my kids say often WAIT….WHAT! I find myself in a frenzy of keeping my sh*t together, and hoping for the best. Most days I can pull it off, but I have a little surprise for you. I AM HUMAN! I have days I want to stay in bed and pull the covers over my head. Days I would like to eat any type of chocolate I can find (which in my house ends up being chocolate chips for baking, and who really is satisfied with those….seriously) Here in lies the 80/20 rule.
For a large portion of my adult life I have restricted foods, cut things out completely, for months to years at a time. Not for any medical/health reason, but because I competed in bodybuilding competitions. I was classic OCD at calculating every macro that I put in my mouth. Pretty much a walking version of my fitness pal before there ever was a my fitness pal. Enter my 40’s, mom of a tween-ager, and 10 year old boys, sports field taxi driver, sideline “motivator”, business freakin’ owner (BOOM! OPT!), and a zillion other jobs titles we all have. Keeping it all together some days is like walking in mine field. How does one avoid stepping on a mine? 80/20 rule.
80% of the time I am feeling GREAT! I’m focused, on track, keeping all the puzzle pieces together. 20% of the time…well, not so much. My mind gets fuzzy, my patience decreases to the thickness of a blade of grass, and then watch out! ‘Cause I become the minefield! lol Who know’s exactly how this feels? My guess is A LOT OF YOU DO! But let’s be real, because life is too short to wear rose petal glasses, and like Sweet Brown “Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That”.
80% of the week my meals are higher protein, moderate fats, lower carbs; which means I stay away from grains except my oatmeal in the morning. A peeve of mine is all you “I don’t eat carbs” people, if you’re eating vegetables and some fruit (like you should be) then you are eating CARBS. But back to 80/20; basically I’m “good” a majority of the week, allowing myself 20% to enjoy some things that I am craving or hormonally obsessing about (insert chocolate, beer, or wine…remember I am human)
If you are reading this and in your mid 40s entering your 50s I know you get the “hormone” factor.
Hang in there! I’m right there with you! And together we got this! But let’s be honest and stop faking it, there are very few people out there (unless they are training for something) that are 100% on top of their nutrition and exercise programs. Don’t believe all the fitness adds, beautiful images of someone who knows way too much about filters and photo shop, the “20 minutes to rock hard abs” the “cleanse that will detox you and make sh*t rainbows”. It’s all BS! What’s not is the belief you have in yourself! Your self confidence makes you more beautiful than any new fad that comes around the corner. KEEP IT REAL! 80/20 give yourself the freedom to live your life and enjoy your life for who are to others, and the legacy that you leave; not for the rock hard abs, the thin thighs, the glamorous hair. Nobody really cares about that anyway. And if they do, they have bigger issues to tend to.
Let’s start your week off knowing you are not alone, you are human, YOU ARE AWESOME! No number on the scale, measurement around your waist, or how fast you can run will ever change your awesomeness! Together we will DO THE WORK! (and then have a beer)
Have a fantastic week!
DO THE WORK
(Above picture taken tonight, ice cream with my boys. PMS in full effect, chocolate butter fudge, sorry not sorry. 80/20 )
