Confidence
January 19, 2018
I finished my first book of 2018 today, “Ultimate Confidence” by Marisa Peer. I must say it is a phenomenal book, one that I am sure I will read again.
During my time reading this book I couldn’t help but to reflect back at how many people I know (including myself) lack some part of confidence in their lives. It’s quite disheartening. I kept asking myself “why”. Why does he/she not see their worth? Why do they not believe in themselves? Why do they keep setting themselves up for sabotage? Why are they so negative?
The answers came the more I read.
Our lack of confidence can delve all the way back to age 7 when someone impacted your life in such a way that your mind found negative or hurtful. It ingrained itself there and as you grew and had life experiences, those experiences that brought up similar feelings to when you were 7 years old reappeared.
Now, don’t sit there and say “oh great! It could be a number of things since I was 7 years old. My childhood wasn’t grand. So therefore I’ll never get over my insecurities.” THERE’S STILL HOPE!
The hope is and relies on YOU to take the steps necessary to overcome those insecurities, to believe in yourself, and most importantly to LIKE YOURSELF.
One important piece to start with is doing things for others. Acts of kindness. When we give of ourselves, and our time the impact it has on the person(s) is immeasurable, the impact it can have on YOU can be even greater. It fills your mind, body, soul, with feel good hormone called Oxytocin. Another benefit from being kind and doing random acts of kindness is Serotonin. Serotonin may act like an anti depressant by helping to calm you down, making you feel more “happy.”
As stated in my previous BLOG, I mentioned a spotlight challenge. Challenging you to do good things for yourself and for others, as well as including personal growth routines into your life. For some, this may seem like a big task to take on. It really isn’t. If you are having trouble with it I advise you to stop over thinking it. As I mentioned before, things such as reading or listening to one personal growth book per month, taking a “new” to you class, sending an uplifting letter to someone in need, volunteering at a school, hospital, nursing home, shelter. Helping your neighbors with their trash each week, visiting people at nursing homes, returning all the grocery carts to the cart area, volunteering at a YMCA. The options are endless!
Do you have a trade or a specific area that you excel in? Cooking, cleaning, math skills, nursing skills, car maintenance, counseling… ANYTHING. Use these skills to help others.
The point is to extend yourself out in order to help someone else. I cannot stress enough how much this can help with your self confidence, your overall liking of yourself, and how your world can change for the good.
So many us start our days feeling “less than”, miserable, dreading work. That immediate thought alone sets the tone for the rest of your day(s). Life is hard; it has some really difficult hurdles to jump over. Some may even feel like walls or barriers close them in. As hard as life can be, there are so MANY MORE GRAND things life offers. We cannot forget we were put here for a purpose, and despite the hurdles, the walls, the barriers, you are here because you MEAN SOMETHING IMPORTANT! YOU ARE IMPORTANT! Those hurdles, those walls, those barriers, you can break through them. You were not created to sit idle, you were created to MOVE to do good things!
So when you are throwing your hands up in the air screaming “WHY!” Stop for a minute, redirect your mind, find the good in your situation (there always is good in each situation, small or large, good is there).
This year, may you practice all these things, over and over again, until it becomes habit. You will find how much more happy you will become.
Final thought;
What you think about is what happens. Good, great, sad, bad, worry, success, it will happen because your mind sets it in motion. START THINKING POSITIVE! THINK BIG! BIG GOALS and even BIGGER GOALS!
Get out there and share your positive energy! Make some changes to your personal growth, do something kind for another person, and sneak in some community services. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! I BELIEVE IN YOU!
