February is HEART MONTH!

Happy Valentine’s Day!  I hope you had a blessed day spent with the one(s) you love!  Remember, it’s about TIME not spending the mighty dollar!

Well, it’s HEART MONTH!!  What have you been doing to keep your heart healthy?  I hope you haven’t been a slug on the couch watching netflix, while downing artery clogging, fat depositing foods! I know you all know this, but it is quite apparent that just because we know so doesn’t mean we do so.  I’m gonna give it to you once again anyway!

FOODS THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOUR HEART!!

  • FISHY FISHY FISH!  Those particular high in omega -3s. Wild caught is best, and always read the small print on the packaging of where that fish came from, you may be surprised.
  • OATS ….YUM my favorite breakfast!  Oatmeal, plain quick or old fashioned!  I like to add in berries, a lil raw honey, and my preference is always add whey protein into it as well.
  • NUTS!  Oh baby, your NUTS!  Almonds, walnuts are among the best.  Raw or roasted, and watch that salt!  No need to have it on them.
  • Fruits….BERRIES! Hard to find fresh this time of year, but berries have excellent source of fiber and heart healthy phytonutrients. Other fruits include those rich in beta carotene, potassium, magnesium and of course FIBER!  (apples, some melons, papaya….fresh of course is best)
  • SPINACH!  Another favorite of mine is the raw baby spinach leaves.  Sauteed or raw, mixed in protein shakes, cooked in soups, or just as is!
  • ASPARAGUS- Gotta love this veggie, it’s sooooo good grilled!  Low in calories, but loaded with fiber and folate!
  • BROCCOLI- Can you say SUPER FOOD! Another favorite, especially roasted with some garlic.
  • TOMATOES- even dried these guys are tasty additions to meals, salads, soups, chili’s. Packed with lycopene, vitamin C, as well  as alpha and beta carotene.

This is just a “quick” list of some of my favorite foods that are heart healthy.  But, again, what’s nutrition without EXERCISE!  The two go hand in hand.  Can you see results without either? You sure can. BUT to maximize your results and over all health, you may want to incorporate an exercise regime into your daily priorities.

Not sure of what exercise to do or where to start….look out your window, the possibilities are endless!  Now, its sub zero temps here, so I wouldn’t recommend going out for long periods of time, but again it is not impossible either.  Guidelines suggest a mere 30min per day of exercise will increase your overall health tremendously.  That’s it, 30 min!  WALK, JOG, RUN! Do something! For those more experienced, longer periods of exercise are great if you can tolerate them.  Keep in mind that in order to burn off 1 pound we need to burn up 500 calories per day for 7 days..consistently.  Don’t be discouraged, just keep moving!

So get up! Get moving, get eating HEALTHY FOODS!  Create a better you from the inside out!

DO THE WORK!!
